நாள் நல்ல!
The last couple of days we went to the 'police station' up and about, 7 times. Apparently once you stay in the city you need to be registred. - cough corruption cough -. When I say station, I actually mean '2x2 room'. The police men are sitting with 4,5 or 6 people around a small table, on plastic chairs. One of them answers the phone, the others' are just hanging around a bit. The first time we arrived here we were told to come back at night. When we came back at night we had to come back tomorrow. When we came back the day after the person who takes care of people like us wasn't there, so we had to come back an other day. Indians aren't really good with time keeping and keeping their word.
On our way back to our appartment I saw some children running around. When asking if there was a school he immediately brought us there. The building indeed turned out to be a school/care center for children from 2,5-4 years old. They were all just sitting around on the floor. No tables. No chairs. No Toys. Heartbreaking. At first they were a litttle shy, looking up at us with those big brown eyes, but once we shook hands and exchanged smiles, the atmosphere turned. I danced with the kids and they started smiling and making noise. Just seeing the sparkle in their eyes made my day.
In the afternoon we planned our introduction with MM Trust. In their office (a small room of max 3x3) we sat down with 6 other people. In the Netherlands we would call it 'Knus'. They showed us a powerpoint with their vision, past projects and goals. In a nutshell: They do a lot of work for cremator families, children and elderly people. They provide education about hygiene/health and English lessons, among others. They built a school and are trying to build an elderly home.
Bhavvik & I will focus on a couple of prevention programs. We are convinced that 'Prevention is better than healing', definiitely in a country like this.
While finishing this blog, the electricity just got cut off, again. So I'll enjoy eating my Nutella Pancake in the dark, enlightened by two small flames.
Enjoy your weekends,
Stephanie & Bhavvik
